ORANGE CO., NEW YORK FAMILY RECORD PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, top half with Laroe family names and birth dates within a box, featuring parents, James B. and Adeline Laroe, above their four children, Mary E., Sarah J., Abigail A., and John H. Laroe, lower half with pictorial motifs of birds, flowers, trees, and flower baskets, all encompassed by a scrolling vine border with stylized flower. Housed under glass in a period veneer frame. Circa 1840. 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" sight, 22 1/4" x 22 1/2" OA. Very good visual condition with light fading and fugitive color to some thread, linen having a few holes along edges and a mended spot near left-hand flower basket with an area of paint/residue, frame with some wear, surface scratches, marks, flakes/chips to veneer, and a loss to one corner of glass. Not examined out of frame. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ.Ex-collection of Peter Cifelli, Los Gatos, CA. Catalogue Note: One of the three Laroe girls likely made this needlework. James B. Laroe (1803-1853) of Bergen Co., New Jersey and Adeline Benedict (1804-1874) of Orange Co., New York married some time before their first child was born in 1827. The family resided in Warwick and Chester, Orange Co., NY, located in the Hudson River Valley. Their four children included on this sampler are Mary E. (b.1827), Sarah J. (1830-1893), Abigail A. (1832-1857), and John H. (1833-1884).
