LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA ATTRIBUTED PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, top with four-row verse from a religious hymn, surrounded by various motifs including flowers, butterflies, and baskets, signed in bottom center "Mary Simpson / 1834 / Lancaster May 2nd", all encompassed by a scrolling flowering-vine border. Housed under UV glass in a veneer frame. Dated 1834. 17 1/2" x 16 1/2" sight, 23" x 22 1/8" OA. Very good visual condition with some light toning and scattered holes to linen, light fading and fugitive color to some thread, frame with wear, cracks and losses to veneer. Not examined out of frame. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ.Ex-collection of Peter Cifelli, Los Gatos, CA.
