Louis Pasteur Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8", Paris, [France]; December 2, 1879. This letter was written on paper stamped with the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes letterhead while he was the director of the Laboratory of Physiological Chemistry. Addressed to an unknown recipient, written in French. Handwritten English translation is included in the lot. It reads in full [English translation]: "Here is Arbois' speech. I have written to Mr. Blot to ask him for a copy of the biographical account published in the "Review of Public Instruction" at the end of last October." Signed, "L. Pasteur." Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was a French biologist, microbiologist, and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization. He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of diseases. Pasteur reduced mortality from puerperal fever and created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax. His medical discoveries provided direct support for the germ theory of disease and its application in clinical medicine. Pasteur is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization. He is regarded as one of the three main founders of bacteriology and is popularly known as the "father of microbiology." Condition: Smoothed mailing creases.
