William McKinley Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, recto and verso of one sheet, 7.5" x 9.75", Camp Ewing; October 11, 1861. Addressed to his sister, Annie, and written when McKinley was with the 23rd Ohio Infantry under Colonel Eliakim P. Scammon. It reads in part: "Your letter directed to Beverly was received a few days since...when I received it we were at Camp Scammon on the top of Sewell Mountain, expecting a ‘foot' at any moment being only about three miles from Floyd's & Wise's forces...owing to the labor and time required to transport our supplies, we fell back some fifteen miles where we are now encamped at a point more accessible and easier of transportation. We did not however fall back until we had discovered that the Enemy for the same and other reasons had retreated...I am not occupying the same position that I was when last I wrote you...instead of being clerk for the Brigade Quarter Master, I am Commissary clerk for the regimental Quarter Master...I like it very much..." Signed, "Wm McKinley." Condition: Letter has separated along several creases, but was silked for preservation. Minute toning and soiling. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
