Two Benjamin Harrison Manuscripts Signed. Includes: [Civil War]. Benjamin Harrison Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Gallatin, Tennessee; April 22, 1883 [1863]. A letter of recommendation for three soldiers to the Governor of Indiana, O. P. Morton, while Harrison was with the 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. It reads in part: "... beg leave to respectfully to submit the following recommendations. 1st that 1st Lieut. William E. Tansey of said Company be promoted to the Captaincy. 2nd that 2nd Lieut. Samuel K. Harryman...be promoted to the 1st lieutenancy and 3rd that Sergt. William McCracken...be promoted to the 2nd Lieutenancy..." Signed, "Benj Harrison / Col. 70th Ind. Vol. Infty." Mounted to a larger paper measuring overall 8.5" x 10.5". Benjamin Harrison Document Signed as President. One page of a bifolium, 8" x 13.25", Executive Mansion; May 27, 1889. A document appointing General John M. Schofield as Secretary of War on a temporary basis. It reads in part: " ...Major General John M. Schofield, commanding the Army, is hereby authorized and directed to perform the duties of Secretary of War, during the temporary absence of the Secretary of War, to begin on the 27th day of May, A.D. 1889."
