Description

[President Millard Fillmore, et al.]. Autograph Album with Signatures from Millard Fillmore, His Cabinet, Congressmen, and Other Notables, circa 1852-1877. This 8.75" x 11" autograph album, bound in red leather with a decorative border gilt stamped on the front and rear covers and "Autographs / Willie Davis" gilt stamped on the front cover, contains over 350 signatures. Wilhelmina "Willie" Davis (1833-1879) was the daughter of Col. George T.M. Davis (1810-1888), a Mexican War veteran who served as aide-de-camp to Gen. John E. Wool, and the wife of American businessman, George Francis Train, a financier for the Union Pacific Railroad and the Transcontinental Railroad. Found within are the signatures of President Millard Fillmore and his entire cabinet, including Millard Powers Fillmore, the president's only son who served as his father's private secretary; Daniel Webster, secretary of state; Thomas Corwin, secretary of the treasury; Charles M. Conrad, secretary of war; William A. Graham, secretary of the navy; Alexander H.H. Stewart, secretary of the interior; Nathan K. Hall, postmaster general; John J. Crittenden, attorney general. While the bulk of the signatures date from 1852, several of President Ulysses S. Grant's cabinet members signed in 1877 including George M. Robeson, secretary of the navy; Zachariah Chandler, secretary of the interior; James N. Tyner, postmaster general; and Alphonso Taft, attorney general. In addition to the president and his cabinet, members of the Senate and House of Representatives have also signed including William R. King, speaker of the Senate; Linn Boyd, speaker of the House; Senator William H. Seward, future secretary of state under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson; Senator Hannibal Hamlin, future vice president under President Lincoln; Senator Thomas J. Rusk, a former general of the Texian Army who fought during the Texas Revolution and served the Republic of Texas as the first secretary of war; Senator Charles Sumner, whose impassioned "Crime Against Kansas" speech led to his beating on the floor of the Senate; Senator Samuel B. Maxey, a general in the Confederate Army; Senator John B. Gordon, also served in the Confederate Army as a general; Senator Simon Cameron, President Lincoln's secretary of war; Senator John A. Logan, a general in the Union Army; Congressman Thomas S. Bocock, who served as speaker of the Confederate House of Representatives; and many, many more. Other notable signatures include those of Robert Gould Shaw, abolitionist and grandfather of the famous colonel (who shared his name) in the Union Army who led the 54th Massachusetts (the first all-black regiment) during the Civil War and died at the Battle of Fort Wagner, author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, poet Charles Sprague, and historian William H. Prescott. A signature by future president Andrew Johnson is found within, but it is signed secretarially. Condition: Front and rear covers are detached and most of the spine covering is missing. The first eight leaves have also separated from the textblock. Pages show some toning and scattered foxing in places. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
