Zachary Taylor Document Signed. One page, 8" x 6", Fort Crawford [Wisconsin]; January 1833. A receipt for "Requisition for fuel, for the Office of the Comdg Officer at Fort Crawford, for the Month of January 1833." Signed, "Z Taylor Col / 1 st Regt. U.S. Infy / Comdg." Fort Crawford was an outpost located in Prairie du Chien in what is now Wisconsin. During Taylor's time in command of the fort, it was in the process of being rebuilt after the first Fort Crawford was damaged during a series of floods. It was here that Black Hawk surrendered and was briefly jailed in 1832. It was also here that Lt. Jefferson Davis met Zachary Taylor's daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor. Davis was initially refused permission to marry Sarah, as Taylor did not wish for his daughter to endure the hardships that came with being a military spouse on the frontier. In response, Davis resigned his commission and the two were married in June of 1835. Sadly, Sarah died three months later after contracting malaria. As a result, Davis and Taylor's relationship remained rocky for the next decade. Condition: Document is ghosted and lightly toned. Pencil notation to recto. Smoothed folds.
