Martha Washington Signed Receipt. One page, 7.75" x 3", no place; September 15, 1801. It reads in full: "Received September 15th 1801 of Robert Lewis (on account of the collection of my rents) four hundred and eight dollars." Signed, "M Washington." Receipt is housed in a custom red leather slip case, with a print of a Martha Washington engraving, to an overall size of 8.25" x 3.75". Robert Lewis was George Washington's nephew and personal secretary from 1789 to 1791. From 1790 to 1792 he was a temporary manager at Mount Vernon, before then taking over the management of the Washington lands in western Virginia in 1793. Condition: .75" closed tear to crease along right margin. Gently toned with some minute foxing. Pencil notation to verso. Slipcase is lightly rubbed.
