George Washington Partial Autograph Letter. Two fragments of one page, each 7" x 3" (sight), New Windsor, [New York]; [circa 1782 to 1783]. The remnants of a letter partially destroyed in a fire. It was written from camp in New Windsor which places the letter from late 1782 to early 1783. Washington and his troops were encamped there for the last winter cantonment of the Revolutionary War. The letter appears to revolve around the management of his estate, Mount Vernon, which he was forced to do by letter during the course of the war. It reads in part: "The multiplicity of...business occasioned by the embarrassed...of our affairs – alone sufficient to...attention & time of any one man...It may be in your power there...reservations to desire and from a...course of sentiment with him on this...With great esteem & regard I am Dr. Sir Yr. affect. Friend &..." A portion of the signature is just barely visible on the bottom right of the second fragment with his distinctive "Go:" still present. Matted and framed with a print of Washington to the overall size of 16.75" x 11.75". Not examined outside of the frame. Condition: Fire and smoke damage along the edges. Toned. Frame is scratched and chipped in places. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
