John D. Imboden Autograph Letter Signed with Union Troop Movement Content. Two pages, 8" x 12", Augusta Springs; December 11, 1862. Addressed to Col. Henry B. Davidson while Imboden was a colonel with the 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers, later known as the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. In this letter Imboden informs Davidson on the movement of a Union force that is moving into the area. It reads in part: "One of my men arrived in Camp last night direct from Petersburg...the Yankees...pitched their tents and went regularly into camp...The force consists of 3 Regiments of Infantry, 6 pieces of Artillery and some Cavalry, with a large wagon train. It is the opinion of both these parties from all they said that their purpose is to go into camp at Petersburg and forage upon the people of that rich valley, and at the same time prevent us from moving on Beverly or any other point west, by being within 54 miles of Monterey. I had already sent a scout into Pendleton before your dispatch was received with instructions to get reliable information. Whatever I get of interest I will promptly send you." Signed, "J. D.
