John D. Imboden Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Lack of Soldier's Supplies in Winter. One page, 8" x 12", Shenandoah Mountain; December 7, 1862. Addressed to Col. Henry B. Davidson while Imboden was a colonel with the 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers, later known as the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. In this letter Imboden informs Davidson of a telegraph he has received from General Robert E. Lee that directs General Jones to call upon Cols. Davidson and Imboden if reinforcements are needed and his concern about the lack of supplies his troops have. It reads in part: "...enclosing copy of telegram from Genl Lee, directly Genl Jones to call upon you & myself for reinforcements, if necessary. I of course would respond to the call if promptly if made, but I do trust there will be no immediate receipt for it. My men are so badly off for blankets – more than one there being without any at all – and the same deficiency of overcoats – that their sufferings would be terrible in such weather as this. I have hastily constructed huts for this protection which enable them to bear the cold with tolerable comfort. My mounted men are better off, and unless the call should be for my whole force I would send or take them first. Except one Company they are armed with rifles, and are drilled to act as Infantry, when required. I deem it important to keep some force here as long as the enemy occupy Beverly. Please communicate this to Genl Jones." Signed, "J. D. Imboden Col / Comdg." From the Military Archive of CSA General Henry B. Davidson. Condition: Mounting residue with paper attachment on verso. Toning from residue has bled through along the recto left margin. Intermittent, light toning from age. Occasional ink smudge. Smoothed mail folds.
