Alexander Hamilton Document Signed. One page, 8" x 9.75", New York; November 7, 1797. The recto of the document contains a list of accounts with the verso endorsed by Hamilton and reading in full: "Ebenezer Stevens Esquire will please to pay to General Wilkinson the amount of the within account." Signed, "A. Hamilton." General James Wilkinson (1757-1825) was a controversial senior officer in the United States Army who served under the first four presidents, yet was later revealed to be selling American secrets to the Spanish crown. Because his opulent lifestyle left him chronically short of funds, Wilkinson began working for the Spanish under the moniker Agent 13. He was responsible for alerting the Spanish of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and suggested they send a patrol to intercept the men, however they were unable to locate them. While he was suspected during his lifetime of spying, it wasn't until the 20th Century that official documentation linking Wilkinson to Spain came to light. Condition: 1.75" closed tear along crease. .75" closed tear repaired on verso. Three areas of tape remnants on top margin recto indicating previous mounting. Lightly rubbed and toned.
