Collection of Assorted Documents Relating to Delegates of the Stamp Act Congress and Continental Congresses. A group of approximately twenty documents dating from 1760 to 1804. They relate to delegates from the Continental Congress of 1765, also known as the Stamp Act Congress, with material from five delegates from the First and Second Continental Congresses. The Continental Congress convened between October 7th and the 25th in 1765 to protest the Stamp Act issued by Parliament in March of that year. It was an intercolonial conference with twenty-seven representatives from nine of the thirteen colonies attending. Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia did not attend because their loyalist governors refused to convene the assemblies to elect delegates. New Hampshire refused due to a financial crisis in the colony, though they did approve the acts once they were passed. The result was the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, which asserted the now famous slogan "No taxation without representation." The lot includes material from Timothy Pickering, James Otis Jr., Oliver Partridge, William Bayard Jr., Timothy Ruggles, Joseph Borden, George Bryan, Hendrick Fisher, Robert Ogden, Edward Tilghman, William Irvine, James Duane, William Churchill Houston, William Smith, Thomas Ringgold, Edward Telfair, Thomas Johnson, and Nicholas Van Dyke. It ranges from autograph letters signed, autograph documents signed, letters signed, clipped signatures, signed checks, and partially printed documents signed which range in size from 6.5" x 2.25" to 8" x 13.25". Condition: Toned, soiled, and rubbed with edgewear. Occasional separation at folds have tape repair to verso. Bottom left corner of one signed check has 1.5" open tear caused by fire damage.
