古渡一说源于日本，起先将乾隆朝以前宜兴产的在日本的紫砂花盆称为古渡盆，进而将清中期及以前的工手泥料好的宜兴紫砂花盆称为古渡盆。日本现在卖东西的将老一点的东西统称古渡。国内对于古渡盆没有官方说法，有个俗成的认识：古渡盆指清中期及以前的泥料有时代特征，制作工艺具艺术感染力且后世基本无法模仿的宜兴紫砂花盆。
