字堪白，民國9年生於浙江餘姚。幼承家學，隨父親習字作畫，書法植基於唐楷，上溯周秦篆籀，筆勢結構成自家風格。書法上，精通篆、隸、楷、行、草五種字體，其中以行草書最具特色。長期習畫以花鳥為主，首以花青入畫蔚為獨特畫風，為其獨到特色。自幼亦由父啟蒙篆刻，後受鄧散木先生指導，並自造其境，刀法俐落，為朱佈白得宜，年方十餘歲即於上海榮寶齋掛牌，才華膽識年輕可見。渡海來台後，任職故宮博物院書畫處處長。
