Satsuma vase, Japan, 2nd half of the 19th century. Cylindrical form, slightly widening towards the top, with short, indented neck and bulging lip rim. The body is divided into 2 high rectangular reserves with natural cutouts and figural staffage. These reserves are each accompanied by a second of the same size, but slightly offset, filled with fine ornamentation. The background with round, multiply varied vegetal cartouches polychrome and gold. The neck with matching curved cartouches with varying floral motifs. Each marked under the bottom (gold on reddish brown), minimally rubbed, h. 31 cm.
