Retailed by Mackay and Chisholm, Paris, movement number 2360 The ribbed handle over a bevelled glass inspection panel, stepped cornice, repeat button and dentil moulding supported on four reeded Corinthian columns to a plinth base, the right hand panel depicting a seated man playing chess, his doublet with white and blue striped body and green sleeves with gilt highlights, his hose red and gilt with white pleats, a feathered hat beside him on the chequer-strung floor, the Renaissance style table and chairs depicted 'en grisaille' and the board with recognisable playing pieces, the right hand panel originally showing another seated figure, but now with old damage and restoration, the signed gilt Roman dial with blued steel hands in a plain gilt mask, the eight day spring driven movement with silvered lever platform escapement with compensated bimetallic balance striking and repeating on coiled steel gong set into a block marked 'F.D.', the movement protected by an English-style solid shuttered rear panel.
