VERY LARGE MANJUSHRI SCULPTURE मञ्जुश्री IN COPPER ALLOY GOLD LACQUER

Heavy cast iron, hollow on the underside and without plate / unsealed. Important remnants of gilded lacquer. Monumental in its proportions, the boddhisattva is depicted sitting in rajalalisana / royal relaxation on a Buddhist lion, at the top of a high base with a row of gadrooned lotus petals. His head is topped by a tiara. Around him are several attributes among which we identify the vase with lustrous waters. His right hand is lodged in the mouth of the beast; the left hand carries a ruyi scepter (lacunar underside plate, lacquer leaps, wears, scratches).

Note: Called Wénshū Púsà / 文殊菩薩, Mañjuśrī / मञ्जुश्री (his name in Sanskrit) is an important boddhisattva in both "Great Vehicle" Buddhism (mahāyāna) and Tantric Buddhism (vajrayāna). Known for his wisdom, his name means "Gracious Glory".
