FRENCH SCHOOL (18th/19th Century) A PAINTING, "Portrait of a Lady as a Vestal Virgin," 1780-1820, oil on canvas laid on board, initialed L/R, "A.K." 28 1/4" x 23 1/4" Note: Although the Angelica Kauffman attribution of the nameplate plaque and initialed signature is not deemed to be correct as a painting by the hand of Kauffman. The present painting is a period allegorical portrait of the late 18th or early 19th century. The unidentified female sitter holds a smoldering 'pater' bowl or censer symbolizing her purity and faith.
