Chinese jade carved Duan ink stone in Longevity Shou character. The stone carved unto flattened with red color Shou Chinese calligraphy form, fitted into a carved hardwood box with comforting design with similar Shou Chinese calligraphy form. An inkstone is a stone mortar for the crushing pigment into ink. Traditional Chinese ink was usually hardened into sticks for easier transportation and conservation. Even a minor quantity of liquid could be applied to the end of a pigment-stick, and that end would be pulverized with the flat surface of the ink stone. The inkstone, together with the brush, pigment (stick) and paper, are the four writing tools traditionally known as the Four Treasures of the Study.
