A DEPICTION OF DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI Rajasthan, North Western India, late 19th century Opaque pigments on paper, the vertical composition depicting the goddess Durga as Mahishasuramardini (the slayer of the Buffalo Demon) standing victorious over the human-headed buffalo-bodied demon attacked by a tiger, the vahana (vehicle) of the goddess, the scene elevated on a lotus pedestal and framed by a polylobed stele topped by a pearl-studded palanquin, in the foreground on the right a standing bare-chested holy man holding a fly whisk and on the left a blue-skinned multi-armed attendant holding a peacock feathers fan, possibly Krishna, the composition set within yellow and bright orange red borders, 26cm x 19.5cm.
