A LACQUERED SAFAVID-STYLE LOOSE BOOK COVER India, 19th century Of rectangular shape, the front and back polychrome-painted and heightened with gold against a translucent dark amber ground, the decoration and composition harking back to Safavid models of Reza ‘Abbasi’s paintings, in the centre a man braiding his hair gazing at himself in a mirror, seated on a square base in a field, framed by a red and gold border, the reverse side decorated simply with floral polylobed medallions on a blue-grey background surrounded by thin lines of gold, mounted on a modern black and gold frame, 34cm x 24.5cm including the frame.
