Liang Yao, Ladies Enjoying Pleasures in the Garden, China, dated 1908. Set of four paintings, framed under glass, each 134 x 38 cm, ink and colors on paper. Each painting with inscription by the artist, one with signature: "The right method to teach children. In the beginning of spring in the wushen year of the Guangxu period (1908) painted for the honorable friend Chengjiang. Younger friend Liang Shiqiao." Altogether five different seals of the artist: "Seal of Liang Yao" (Liang Yao zhi zhang), "Shiqiao" etc. The set seems to illustrate enjoyments of ladies through the four seasons. In spring the chasing of butterflies, in summer teaching children, in autumn watching the moon in a water basin and in winter looking through the window onto the bamboo in deep snow. Fine paintings in the typical style of the time. The figures and faces are rendered in delicate lines, the landscape elements are executed in a courser and simpler brushwork. - Published in the magazine 'Dimensions', April 1989, cover and p. 69 - Property from an old German private collection, acquired in the 1980s - Traces of age
