据《药师经》说，他曾发十二大愿，为众生医治病苦，消灾延寿，所以藏传佛教寺院的医学殿内常供药师佛。此尊头饰螺发，面相方正，额头宽平，五官俊秀，面带微笑。身躯劲健，肌肉饱满，四肢粗壮有力。上身着袒右肩袈裟，左手结禅定印，右手持有药丸。下穿贴身僧裙，双腿结跏趺端坐，下承仰覆莲高座。整像造型与哲布尊丹巴创立的喀尔喀蒙古风格有着极大关系，但其人物造型及莲座样式又明显受到漠南蒙古艺术的影响，展现了蒙古地区独有的民族审美情趣。
