嘉靖五彩盛极一时，色调纯正，绚烂陆离，精品堪比永乐、宣德的上乘青花，鱼藻纹罐则无疑是个中名品。该罐造型饱满敦厚，形体硕大。腹部主题纹饰池塘鱼藻纹，画中金鱼浮游其中，鲜活跳跃于浮萍和水草之间，悠然自在，形态各异，水草妖娆浮动，画虽无水，水却自然而现。绘饰金鱼所用的彩料最为独特，为“黄上红”釉彩套叠工艺，使金鱼之色沉凝内敛，颇具韵味，而“黄上红”谐音“皇上红”，表达了当时的制瓷艺人对帝王的歌颂。此件五彩罐鱼纹为主角，所见诸鱼鳞鳍清晰，飘逸灵动，极具神采。鱼儿与水藻的空间分布上十分自然，罐身八尾，罐盖四尾，共计十二尾，象征“月月有余”。嘉靖皇帝痴迷道教，而“鱼”在老庄的道教思想中亦有着重要的地位，最著名的便是“知鱼之乐”，体现一种自由自在的生活理念。
