Etruscan ca. 500 B.C. Bronze.
H. 3 3/16 in; 9.6 cm
The young woman wears a chiton that reaches to her ankles and fits tightly around her legs. She steps forwards slightly with her left foot. The top of her right arm that was probably originally outstretched has been preserved. The left hand gracefully pulls up the thin fabric of the chiton, thereby creating a small cascade of fabric above the ankle. A short cloak decorated with incised crosses forms symmetrical folds over the chest and covers her back. The kore has almond-shaped eyes and smiles slightly. She wears disc-shaped earrings. Her hair is tied up in a conical, coiled cap. The ample curls above the forehead are crowned by a narrow diadem. The posture and costume is based on Greek models. Statuettes of korai were frequently presented as votive offerings in sanctuaries dedicated to female deities.
Right buttock and tips of feet slightly worn. Surface partially corroded light green.
Priv. coll. Dr. Frank Hieronymus (1930-2022), Basel.
