Alexandrian, Late Hellenistic-Roman 2nd-1st cent. B.C. Red brown clay. H. 5 45/64 in; 14.5 cm. W. max. 3 1/2 in; 8.9 cm
Grotesque representation of a slave striding forwards energetically on a base that is rounded at the back. The semi-bald pate is rendered by engraving. The slave has a started expression and draws his head in between his shoulders. With his left hand he steadies the pointed amphora resting on his shoulder, mouth downwards. With his right hand, he touches his temple in horror. Loin cloth around his waist, a long phallos dangles between his legs. Reverse smoothed, spine above round firing hole. Mould-made.
Traces of white slip and red paint. Slightly worn at the right shoulder and edge of the base.
Christie's, London, 9.12.1992, lot 1 with illus. Thereafter The Erotika Collection Christian von Faber-Castell, Küsnacht ZH, Switzerland.
