A Rare Japanese Lacquered Wood Namban Coffer, Momoyama/Edo period, of European sailor's chest form, decorated on the sides and top with shaped vignettes edged with mother of pearl chips, enclosing birds and flowering plants in gold and coloured lacquer, baroque style metal mounts, L:40.5cm., fair condition, some chipping, particularly along lower edges. Lee Yu-Kuantan illustrates a comparable Momoyama period (1573-1615) casket as illustration no.170, on p.237 of ‘Oriental Lacquer Art’, New York 1972, where he remarks that ‘ caskets and chests with decoration of this type were originally made for export to Spain’
