STATUETTE DE DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI EN LAITONINDE, HIMACHAL PRADESH, DÉBUT DU XIVE SIÈCLE25.3 cm (10 in.) highProvenance: A BRASS FIGURE OF DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINIINDIA, HIMACHAL PRADESH, EARLY 14TH CENTURY印度 喜馬偕爾邦 十四世紀早期 屠牛魔形難近母銅像Published:Arman Neven,Sculpture des Indes, Brussels, 1978, p. 225, no. 168.Ulrich von Schroeder,Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, p. 155, no. 29G.Exhibited:Sculpture des Indes, Société Générale de Banque, Brussels, 8 December 1978 - 31 January 1979.Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1978Wielding her trident, Durga is depicted here as the heroic figure who pierces the heart of the buffalo demon Mahishasura lying prostrate below. Prevalent from this later period in the Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh is a folk style which shows a thinner and angular treatment towards anatomies, oversized heads with enormous almond shaped eyes, and ribbed necks, all which appear in this example. Images of Mahishasuramardini from Himachal Pradesh popularly depict the goddess wearing a village skirt, as illustrated here. The overallposition, architectural frame of the throne, and Durga's dress all match another image of the same goddess attributed to middle Sutlej, Nirmand in Postel, Neven and Mankodi,Antiquities of Himachal, 1985, p. 143, fig. 204.
