Ca. 664-332 BC. An Egyptian carnelian scarab with incised detailing to form a ridged carapace and naturalistic features. The flat underside has been left undecorated. The amulet has been pierced longitudinally for suspension. For similar see Bonhams, 5 October 2011, lot 10. Ancient Egyptian believed carnelian, because of its fiery colour, was often associated with the blood-lust and rage of Egyptian deities.
