Provenance:Ms. Chou, Seattle, Washington. Collected from 1960s to 1970s by her father, Dr. Edward Chou, who was a surgeon in Hong Kong. This collection was shipped to in the US in the late 70’s and was kept in the house thereafter. With a letter of provenance.

英文长介绍:An intricately carved jade brush holder dating to the Ming dynasty. Inclusions of russet and brown hue throughout the white and green jade give the highly worked stone a mottled appearance. This mottled coloration and rough surface are characteristic of Ming dynasty jade; often lesser-quality with cracks and impurities likely due to the difficulty in obtaining the material during the period. Naturalistically carved Lingzhi mushrooms densely populate the upper portion of this work, while the lower and reverse areas contain carved likenesses of cave and stone patterns. The technique used, which favors a rough treatment of relief carving, was inherited from Song and Yuan dynasties. The carved lines are rigid and sharp with distinct edges and corners, however detail is not lost among this roughness. Compared with similar objects, this item stands out for not only its artistry but its utility as a brush holder; truly an artful combination of decoration and practicality. Considering the combination of uses and the scarcity of jade in Ming dynasty, this rare artwork was likely a desk item intended for a palace setting.

中文长介绍:本件作品為青白玉質地，以整塊玉料雕製而成，造型圓潤厚重，沈穩大方。所選玉料質地堅實細密，上留褐色沁斑，色彩斑駁，表面包漿均勻潤澤，尤顯古意盎然。明代玉材特點，基本以青白玉為主，青玉、白玉次之，質佳者較少，多有綹裂、雜質，應與當時玉材來源不易有關。筆架上層雕靈芝，刻畫寫實，上下交錯，形態各異，下層及背面則鏤雕洞石之型。其雕工傳承了宋元代的藝術工藝特點，造型粗獷，使用鏤雕法，平面雕兩層花，俗稱「花上壓花」。線條剛勁利落，棱角分明，不拘小節。筆架尺寸在同類品種中偏大，層次豐滿，包漿醇厚，集鑒賞、裝飾、實用於一體，在玉石材料匱乏的明代，尤顯難得，應是宮中案頭之物。
