One sheet, 6 x 7 1/2 in. (152 x 191 mm). Partially-printed legal document, signed by Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts, Robert Treat Paine, as Justice of the Peace, subpoenaing Joseph Paine of Freetown for a debt owed to the British Crown, and for the "charge against him for breaking open the Store of Thomas Gilbert Esq. & stealing sugar.." Creasing from contemporary folds; short closed tear along one fold. In mat with portrait of Paine, and in frame, 20 x 21 1/4 in. (508 x 540 mm).Together with:Heyward, Thomas, Jr.Partially-Printed Document, signedSouth Carolina, March 23, 1786. Oblong sheet, 7 1/2 x 12 3/4 in. (191 x 324 mm). Partially-printed legal document, signed by Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina, Thomas Heyward, Jr., as a judge of the Circuit Court of South Carolina, ordering the sheriffs of South Carolina to arrest Rebecca Wakefield, of Charleston, for a debt of "One hundred Seventy three pounds six Shillings and eight pence Sterling", owed to Daniel Legare, Jr.; inscribed on verso by Sheriff Isaac Huger (1743-1797), former Brigadier General in the Continental Army: "I have endeavoured by Patrick Byrne my lawful Deputy to find the within named Defendant but could not. Therefore by my said Deputy left a true Copy of this Writ with a Notice thereon endorsed at the usual and most notorious place of the Defendants residence...", docketed to same; original paper seal intact. Minor losses within Heyward's signature due to ink oxidation; creasing from contemporary folds; two small short closed tears in bottom edge; in mat with portrait of Heyward, and in gilt frame, 22 1/2 x 26 1/2 in.
