During the 1920s and 1930s, sculptor and designer Gerhard Schliepstein (German, 1886-1963) developed a signature style that bridged Jugendstil and emerging Art Deco, applied to bronze, porcelain, and, in rare cases, furniture. Schliepstein designed the present lighted vitrine for his own home, evidenced by its appearance in archival photos. It features highly stylized decorative motifs highlighted in gold against turquoise painted ground and relates to a cabinet in the permanent collection of the Wolfsonian Museum at Florida International University.
