Description Exceptional Steuben Cut Green Cintra Glass Paperweight Cologne with Mica Inclusions, circa 19308-3/8 inches (21.3 cm)LITERATURE:T. P. Dimitroff,Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass: American Classics, 1998, p. 140, fig. 6.11 (similar example of shape 6944).In 1925, Steuben director Frederick Carder served as a delegate to the Hoover Commission, which represented the United States at the Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. There, Carder viewed the works of René Lalique, Maurice Marinot, and François-Emile Décorchemont in the nascent Art Deco style characterized by simple forms, straight lines, and sparce decoration. While he feared the impact of mechanization on design, craftsmanship, and taste, Carder admired the work of his French contemporaries who adopted the modern style while maintaining individual expression and superior craftsmanship. Despite his concerns and his personal aesthetic preferences, he began to design sleek shapes and stylized patterns, ushering in a new period in Steuben's history. This extremely rare cologne bottle is one of the finest examples of Carder's somewhat reluctant yet highly successful foray into Art Deco. It features Cintra glass flecked with mica inclusions and wrapped in streaks of seafoam green encased in a thick layer of deeply cut clear glass. The dynamic, angular form speaks to the internally decorated and acid cutback perfume bottles of French designer Marinot as well Cubist painting of the early 20th century. It soars to a height of more than 8 inches due to its faceted pyramidal stopper. While the term "paperweight" was not used by Steuben at the time of production, it has been embraced by collectors of Steuben's Art Deco works.
