Description George Shane (American/Iowa, 1906-1969) oil on canvas street scene titled "Strollers along the River Bank," depicting pedestrians walking along a treelined road with the River Seine and a bridge on one side, and busy cafes on the other. Signed "George Shane" lower right. Additionally signed, and titled, en verso. Housed in a giltwood molded frame with beaded sight edge and linen liner with gilt fillet. Sight: 20" H x 24" W. Framed: 30" H x 34" W. Biography: "Born in Eldon, Iowa, George Shane was an art critic and painter who focused on regional scenes of Iowa. He studied at the University of Kentucky and at the Art Institute of Chicago with Louis Bouche. He exhibited with the Des Moines Art Club and the Iowa Art Educators' Association, and he served as President of the Des Moines Art Forum from 1952 to 1953. From 1938 he was art critic for the Des Moines Register. In 1958, he received a grant from Gujivi Malville, a local art patron, to research Impressionism in Paris."
