Description A hand-painted Russian icon in tempera on wood panel with kovcheg depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ Child seated in a fountain as the "The Life Giving Source" (alternatively Fountain or Spring) before a gold field. They are flanked by angels and below a crowd of worshippers has gathered before a rocky landscape. With a silvered brass basma with foliate ornamentation, the right side of which has been replaced with a more intricately patterned segment. Sticker label, en verso. 10 3/8" H x 9 1/16" W. Basma is missing nails and some cracking is visible on the sides. Lower right corner of basma is partially detached. Right side of basma has been replaced.
