Overall wear to the surfaceSome firing imperfectionsSome surface scratchesA few chipsPresence of a hole to the base rim on which a metal wire is attachedThis exceptional collection of Ottoman art was built up by Ernest Mamboury (1878-1953), a man with an equally exceptional destiny. Born in Nyon and a student at the Beaux-arts in Geneva and Paris, he taught geometric drawing, mathematics and French from 1923 onwards at the Galatasaray High School in Istanbul, which had been set up to train the elite of the young Republic. A teacher much appreciated by his Turkish students, he also distinguished himself as an outstanding specialist in the history of the Second Rome and its rich artistic heritage, and was therefore involved in numerous archaeological excavation and restoration campaigns. His personal collection is a testimony to his remarkable theoretical and practical knowledge. His son William (1918-2021) followed in part his father`s passion. His brilliant diplomatic career took him to Yaoundé and Paris, but he ended his career in Istanbul as Consul General of Switzerland. He will thus make his contribution to the collection initiated by his father.
