瓷器造型呈斗形，故称方斗杯。明代的王世懋《窥天外乘》记：“盖窑器圆者，镟之立就，倏忽若神；独方物即至小，亦须手捻而成，最难完整。供御大率十不能一二，余者皆置之无用。”因方斗杯成型时将坯泥制成片状粘接而成，制作工艺较圆器复杂，器形多不规整。可见方斗杯烧造之难。
