The story of Lady Godiva became popular in the 19th century and was depicted several times. The present bronze goes back to a boxwood sculpture created by Josef Moest in 1906 (today in the Cologne City Museum) and which was then cast in bronze several times - J. Moest was the son of the Cologne sculptor and restorer Richard Moest and received his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Syrius Eberle. There he received his first impressions of modern sculpture influenced by Art Nouveau. From 1903 he worked as a freelance sculptor in his own studio in Cologne, creating small sculptures, fountains and altars as well as architectural sculptures in collaboration with various architects.
