The composition is based on the altarpiece by Sir Anthony van Dyck "The Ecstasy of Saint Augustine" at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. Pieter de Jode the Younger (106-1674) had engraved this painting in reverse before 1634 (O. Miller u.a., Van Dyck, A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven and London 2004, p. 278), and the present work could well have derived from his print. Willem van Herp d. Augustinus in Ekstase" von Anthony van Dyck im Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerpen. Pieter de Jode der Jüngere (1606-1674) hat dieses Gemälde vor 1634 seitenverkehrt gestochen (siehe O. Miller u.a., Van Dyck, A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven und London 2004, S. 278). Möglicherweise diente der Stich als Vorlage für vorliegendes Bild.
