While this period specifically refers to a lack of imperial control of porcelain production, it is set against a backdrop of protracted and bloody civil war. During this time the system of imperial orders collapsed, and the once-obedient civil servants had to become go-getting businessmen, seeking new clients both domestic and overseas. The new customer base led to stylistic changes on the porcelain, with many new products decorated with literary scenes copied taken woodblock prints. The vase here is decorated with a scene of a lady on a boat and a scholar on horseback accompanied by a poem to the reverse.
