胡念祖是黃君璧的第一大弟子。長年以來立基於傳統繪畫根基，不但不墨守陳規，更能汲古融今，另以潑墨潑彩、灑拓染印風格建立自家風貌。大千先生曾在其畫作上題道：「古稱得筆法易，得墨法難；得墨法易，得水法難；今觀念祖道兄大作，筆墨水俱入神化，非近百年來所有也，佩歎無似！」其畫作在台灣、大陸拍賣市場也很搶手。
