CIMIER KURUMBABurkina Faso Bois. 103cm (40 1/2in) high. KURUMBA HEADDRESS Burkina Faso This type of headdress, known as adone, is a characteristic creation of the Kurumba people living in the north of present-day Burkina Faso. They appeared at major events associated with funeral rites and thememoration of ancestors and spirits, and of the antelope that saved the life of the founding ancestor, revered by most Kurumba clans. They could also have been used as portable altars tomemorate a specific ancestor. The painted designs on the sculpture could be related to cosmological concepts or legends about the origin of the clan. For two examples of the same type respectively kept at the Musée du Quai Branly (formerly at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. See C.D.Roy, Art of the upper volta rivers , Paris, 1987, figs.162 and 164.
