He joined the Royal Aircraft establishment in 1927; he was Director of Scientific Research, Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1943; and Chief Scientist to Ministry of Supply 1949-1953. He collected oriental art and published extensively, producing key reference works on blue and white ware, lacquer ware and cloisonné enamels. He and Lady Garner donated much of the collection to the British and Victoria and Albert Museums.
