A RARE FAMILLE VERTE 'JAPANESE STYLE' TEAPOT AND COVERKangxi The elegantly potted vessel of elongated melon shape with eight lobes applied with loop handle and curving spout, decorated with various flower sprays including chrysanthemum and lotus all between lotus scroll border at the foot and one of peony on the shoulder, the handle and spout decorated with green karakusa ('Chinese grass'), the domed cover similarly decorated with peony, surmounted by a ball knob finial. 15.5cm (6 1/8in) high. (2). 清康熙 五彩柿右衛門風格花卉紋瓜棱形蓋壺 The present lot is a rare example of direct Chinese copying of Japanese Kakiemon-style wares. A matching Japanese teapot from the Jenyns collection is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and illustrated by S.Jenyns, Japanese Porcelain London, 1965, pl.78A. Jenyns argued that the teapot would have been made to meet a Western demand, as Japanese tea-making procedures did not require such a pot; rather the Chinese version would have been supplied to the Dutch in Batavia or other European trading posts. pare with a very similar famille verte teapot and cover, Kangxi, illustrated in Porcelain for Palaces: The Fashion for Japan in Europe 1650-1750 , London, 1990, no.502. Another is illustrated by J.Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen , vol.1, London, 2016, no.252.
