Moved with his family to Venice as a child, he studied in the workshops of G. Guardi and A. Joli as well as with the battle painter F. Simonini. After 1757 he gained a position among the leading painters of Paris, in 1763 he became a member of the academy and Peintre du Roi . Leaving behind numerous debts, he fled to Vienna in 1783, where he was able to build on his Parisian successes and, through the mediation of Prince Ligne, worked for Catherine the Great, among others.
