R. was trained as a lithographer and attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Kassel. After a stay in Scandinavia, he worked in Hamburg until 1938, when he received a scholarship to the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. War service and captivity took him as far as Tbilisi. After many stations, he settled back in Hamburg. His studio in the Sylt Witthüs became a center of intellectual life.
