A Romanesque Style Carved Red Hardstone Bocche Di Leone (Lion s Mouth) Italian, possibly 17th century, carved red marble, shaped pediment with Romanesque head and open mouth relief, having carved latin inscription "DENONTIE SECRETE ACLI Ec. RRs RI /INOVISTRORI SOPRA L OFFITIO / DAL SAL / 6 R." Approximately 22 1/2 x 35 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. Complaint boxes, or Bocche Di Leone, were hung on the facades of a building and provided a way for citizens to file complaints or otherwise communicate with the government.
