Fifteen Lacquerware ItemsJapan, late Meiji period or later, a black square organizer box and cover, decorated with geometric squares in gold on the cover; a rectangular red-lacquered covered box decorated with irises and butterflies in gold and black; a set of eight black square plain trays; and a set of five black dishes with gilt grapevine design, ht. to 4 1/4, wd. to 12 7/8 in. Provenance: From the David Drabkin Collection, many of which were loaned to the Yale University Art Gallery for exhibition/research. Mr. Drabkin formed his art collection while residing in many parts of Asia, including Japan, China, and Thailand. His keen interest in Asian art led him to build a close relation with many fellow art collectors, gallery owners, art historians, and art dealers, such as J.J. Lally.
