提要：是书为严复翻译了英国生物学家赫胥黎的《天演论》。该书的问世产生了严复始料未及的巨大社会反响，康有为见此译稿后，赞叹“眼中未见有此等人”，称赞严复“译《天演论》为中国西学第一者也”。此书封面有题记：“赫胥黎天演论，侯官严几道复译述，光绪辛丑富文书局木刻”字样，颇为难得。识者宝之。
